I’m sure that creationists will be able to handwave away all of the details that will be presented individually, but let’s see what happens when they are all presented simultaneously. I have little hope that creationists will read this and understand, but I do want to take this opportunity to go over the things we know, understand, and don’t know about the idea of common descent, which is what this book is really about. I got to chapter 2 and thought, dang, I wish all those creationists would read this and understand it. Still, he is entertaining to read and the story flows quite smoothly. He does tend to transition between topics quickly and without much of a segue. I started reading it and I must say that Shubin is an excellent writer. While there I picked up some books for the boy and found Your Inner Fish by Dr. This weekend, I had occasion to take a stack of books to the local buy-back bookstore. Shubin found an organism that, for all intents and purposes, is the perfect transitional organism between fish and amphibians.įurther it is an amazing example of the predictive power of science in general and evolutionary theory in particular. The fact that he isn’t is just another example of the pitiful science education (both formal and continuing) in the US. She’d earned herself a cracked rib and a bloody nose. She had ended up taking the brunt of Troy’s wrath because she’d dared to defend her little brother. Paradoxical, the whole experience.Īme had ridden the four-wheeler that Troy used during hunting season until Zach had torn it up during an alcohol-induced rampage across the countryside with friends. When she was riding, she was paying homage to the earth while astride a two-ton machine. On a four-wheeler, you were free from your pedestrian self and, yet, completely connected to the world beneath your tires. It was, for example, addicting and liberating at the same time. She did, however, enjoy raising hell, and she was as devoted to riding a four-wheeler as any other kid within a twenty-mile radius of Snyder Farms.Īme had given some thought to the matter of four-wheeling, and she had discovered that it was a paradoxical pastime. Ame was not a redneck country kid she was a redheaded country witch. There are a lot of things that redneck country kids like to do: hunt, fish, screw, drink cheap beer, jack up their four-wheel drives, and raise hell. In the book, the characters face many conflicts. It was a little underwhelming at some points and I very strongly cared for one plotline over another, but I'm a sentimental mess when it comes to these books so it did not have a huge impact on my reading experience. This is not the most entertaining story I've read from the Shadowhunter world. (As a note, this novella includes spoilers for The Infernal Devices series)īeing honest, I do tend to struggle more with Cassandra Clare's novellas than her full novels (I just feel 500-700 pages does her writing more justice than being restricted to short stories) so this is definitely not my favorite work of hers, but was enjoyable nonetheless. I'm so happy to be back in the world of new Shadowhunter content! Son of the Dawn was a great first installment to what will surely be a fantastic novella series. |
